In today's first reading we see Paul's love and concern for those with whom he has shared the good news. On hearing about their fidelity to the faith he is comforted in his own struggles and gives thanks to God with great joy in his heart. Paul, the great missionary, continues to spread the good news even in the midst of persecution and hardship. He realizes that he has been entrusted with a precious gift.
Paul is surely like the faithful and honest servant we hear about in today's Gospel. He is passing on the gift of faith he has received and does so with great sincerity and love. He prays for his followers, the new converts to the faith, that their love may increase more and more and that when the Lord comes he will find them blameless in the sight of God.
Stay awake, today's Gospel reminds us, because we do not know when the Master will come. This is an invitation to us to be always ready. Perhaps it is an invitation to reflect on our daily lives. How do I spend my days, my time? Will I be like the faithful and wise servant when the Master comes?
Lord, we pray that we may appreciate the gift of life and the gift of faith that we have received and use these gifts as You would wish us to use them.
