The forbidden fruit attracted Eve on two different levels. There was first of all the physical level: "the tree was good for food". Then there was a more spiritual level: the tree was "desirable for gaining wisdom". It seems that scripture is teaching us that the desire to obtain wisdom was in the human spirit from the very beginning.
In her desire for wisdom, Eve was led astray: she stepped into forbidden territory. If she had been obedient to God's command, she would have more quickly come to the wisdom she desired. As another Scripture writer came to realize later on, the true beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord. This fear of the Lord is a deep reverence for God and a fidelity to God's will. This reverence and fidelity bring us to realize that true wisdom dwells in the person of Jesus Christ.
Does modern science, like Eve, step into forbidden territory in its search for what it considers wisdom? Cloning, genetic engineering, breaking the genetic code - do these scientific "advances" lead humanity to believe it can usurp the place of God and control the mystery of life?
Father in heaven, teach us to seek wisdom in the revelation of Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
