Both the readings today speak powerfully about true Christian discipleship. When Jesus compared His followers to salt, He wanted His followers (us) to witness to the world by good works; otherwise, they would be like useless and tasteless salt. More importantly, as salt of the earth, Christians are called to serve like Jesus who came not to be served but to serve and to give His life for the salvation of all (Mt. 20:28).
Similarly, the imagery of the lamp which gives light also implies selfless service like Jesus.
Such good deeds are also expected from the Christian community whose ultimate goal in all their good works is the glorification of God.
This is very beautifully said by Paul in the first reading, in his words ". . . It was never yes or no; with Him it was always yes . . ." ". . . it is through Him that we answer" amen " to the praise of God."
May this same spirit that moved Paul to so many wonderful experiences, be with us too.
Lord, help us to give selflessly in our efforts to serve Christ in others especially the underprivileged and needy ones around us.
