Today's Gospel follows immediately on the story of the rich man who was invited to become a follower of Jesus but was not prepared to share his wealth with the poor and so went away sad-faced. Peter then asks about himself and his fellow disciples, who have thrown in their lot with Jesus and left behind their means of livelihood. Jesus promises that anyone who leaves everything for Him will not experience loss. On the contrary, such a person will benefit many times over. This is because when we enter a genuinely Christian fellowship everyone takes care of everyone else and each one's needs are taken care of. When everyone gives everyone gets. It is not a pie-in-the-sky promise or simply a promise for life after death. The Kingdom that Jesus came to preach is a world where all resources are shared in love and service. Does this describe the community I belong to?
Teach us, Lord, to be generous in sharing our resources - spiritual and material - with others.
