When the Pharisees objected to Jesus' association with men like Levi, an undesirable persons in their eyes, Jesus answered that He had come to call 'sinners', meaning everyone in this world, including them. This is a point missed by the Pharisees. The Scribes and Pharisees were very foolish people. They considered themselves righteous, that is in their own eyes but not in the eyes of God. When Jesus said "The healthy do not need a physician", He was being ironic, meaning the opposite of what He said in the sence that the Scribes and Pharisees were not healthy at all. They were obviously sick with the spiritual disease of selfish pride they were unwilling to admit that they were 'sick'.
Today, the Church calls everyone. As disciples, it is our duty to make everyone feel welcome in Church, no matter how they may be dressed or how unappealing they may appear or what others may say of them. The very fact that they come to church may be taken as a sign that they wish to respond to Jesus just like Levi. To wish to exclude anyone is to be guilty of the self-righteousness of the Pharisees who alone desired to be included.
Lord, You came to call everyone. Empower us to bring others to You and may they experience the joy of knowing You. Amen.
