In the Gospel reading, Jesus instructed His disciples on 'scandals', 'forgiveness' and 'faith'. On 'scandals' (Lk. 17:1-3; Mk. 9:42 & Mt. 18:6), Jesus warned them of judgement on those who cause others to fall away from faith. They have to be on their guard and not to become the source of scandal for others who are helpless and defenceless.
'Forgiveness' is a distinctive feature of Christianity. Christians should set no limit to forgiving someone who has wronged us. The expression '7 times' means 'unlimitedly' since it denotes totality (Mt 18:21-22). We have to be constantly reminded of the dangers of prolonged anger, resentment and grudges.
'Faith' is the essential element in discipleship. Jesus' response to the disciples was in the form of hyperbole, that is, even a relatively large-sized and deeply rooted tree can be uprooted and transplanted in the sea. This is the quality and power of faith in God and believing in the 'impossible'. Authentic faith expressed both in deeds and prayer is what the world needs today. Moreover, deep faith will ensure effectiveness in spreading and preaching the Kingdom of God.
In order to make this happen, we are told of what God as 'wisdom' can do - seeing into the innermost parts of our being, observing our heart and listening to our prayers.
Lord, help my unbelief so that my faith will grow into a life of love, and forgiveness.
