At Easter we proclaim: "This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad". Though they apply in a special way to the Resurrection, these words can be applied to any day, for every day is a gift of the Lord. The same is true of the whole universe. We may, then, proclaim: "This is the world which the Lord has made; let us rejoice in it". The Book of Wisdom finds it surprising that people can study and appreciate nature and the universe without ever coming to a knowledge of the Creator. Clearly, the universe is not some manmade object. Contemplation of the heavens or of nature, then, should draw our hearts to a search for the Creator
While the author of the Book of Wisdom concentrates on reading the book of nature to discover the Creator, Jesus today calls upon us to learn from the stories that make up our history and culture. The Jews all knew the story of Noah, and so Jesus uses it to press home his doctrine of watchfulness and the danger of complacence. A strong and clear faith which listens to Jesus will teach us to see the hand of God in all things.
Lord, teach us to respond to You as You speak to us in nature and history.
