Jonah was angry that God decided to forgive the Ninevites; he did not want God to spare this enemy of Israel. But God is gracious and compassionate. He expresses His love for Nineveh. Yes, God's love is beyond comprehension. His love for humankind extends beyond His own people to lost people everywhere. This truth was finally seen when He sent His only Son, Jesus, to die for all people.
Luke stresses this in the need for persistence in prayer. For it is in prayer that we accept God in the intimacy which He desires to have with us. At the same time, Luke also reminds us that God's thoughts are above our thoughts. We do not have the wisdom to know what we truly need. Therefore our prayer must always be like the prayer of Jesus' in the Agony: "Let thy will be done, not mine." God our Father knows exactly what we need. He will grant us whatever He thinks is best for us because we are His beloved children. Let us then persist in prayer and submit to the providence of God in whom we should have faith and confidence for the things in our life that we cannot control.
Father in heaven, let thy will be done according to thy word, for I trust in You always. Amen.
