What is our role as human beings in God's plan of salvation? Does God need us? The covenant between God and Abraham clearly shows us the importance of our own fidelity and cooperation. God promised Abraham that because of his fidelity, he would become a source of blessing for all the peoples of the earth - his name would live on forever. But it was necessary for him to keep his part of the covenant - and that is clear throughout the Old Testament. Walking in God's ways, with our hearts in harmony with Him, enables God to bless us and others through us. The godly life that we choose and live has wonderful consequences not only for us but for the whole world. God needs us - we are in partnership with the Divine.
Jesus shocks his listeners by insisting that he is far greater than Abraham; in fact, Jesus existed long before the world was ever created. Jesus is far greater than any human concept or limitation, and he challenges us to push beyond the confines of tradition, custom, and society. He includes everyone. He treats all with love, dignity and respect. He comes to bless and heal all people, regardless of who they are. Our faith in him is also a covenant, and it is important that we keep our part of it.
Lord, keep me faithful to my covenant with you.
