All the Gospels indicate clearly that Jesus was very conscious of the consequences of the life He was leading, preaching the Kingdom of God and bringing that kingdom into the lives of people through healing miracles and table fellowship with sinners. Sometimes He was told that certain people were plotting against Him, sometimes, as in today's Gospel, He faced actual attempts on His life. His awareness of the threat of death did not deter Him from His mission.

Jeremiah had a similar experience: he knew that he was in danger. He felt the threat of death, even from his friends, just as Jesus was betrayed by one of His close disciples, Judas Iscariot. Jeremiah, like Jesus, did not collapse in fear at the thought of the threats surrounding him. Like Jesus, Jeremiah had a great trust in the Lord. For Jesus that trust came from His awareness of His union with the Father: "the Father is in me and I in him". Jeremiah believed that the Lord was with him and this allowed him to find God even in the midst of his danger. He faced his suffering positively believing that the Lord "tests the just".

Lord, when suffering tests our faith, let us respond to You with greater confidence and hope, trusting in Your mercy and strength.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
