With the increase in the number of disciples, the apostles' burdens increase and a wise decision is made to enlist more leaders to take over a section of the work, which was caring for the poorest among the people. The apostles' reason for their decision is a reminder to all Christian leaders of the need to place priority on prayer in their lives if they are to recognize Christ and find their service to the Church truly fruitful.
In the reading from Jn. 6:17, Jesus shows His concern for His apostles by calming their fears and re-assuring them of His presence. They had struggled all night "for the wind was against them." Christ though He had been watching them delayed coming to their help. It is a lesson that we should not expect immediate solutions to our problems and that we have to await God's good time.
Let our faith never waver no matter what difficulties we encounter. "Fear not", Christ says, He will not forsake us if we do our duty and have confidence in Him.
O Lord, help me to trust in You in all, in spite of all, and forever.
