There is much talk nowadays about globalization. The internet has changed world communications, world finances and commerce. This advance should have meant an increase in prosperity and well being for the world. It has indeed increased prosperity, but only for the small section of humanity that already controls most of the riches of the world. As in every age, increased prosperity for rich people and rich nations is usually obtained at the cost of social justice. If Amos were alive and preaching today, no doubt he would have had to change his terminology: there would be no more talk of festivals, like that of the new moon, being over, no more talk of ephahs and shekels. But his message would not have had to change much. The objective of his invective would have been very much the same: "you who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land". Over the past few years, the world has been rocked by major commercial crimes. Amos would say, sternly if not cynically, "So what's new". Commercial crimes were rife in his own day: diminishing the ephah, adding to the shekel, fixing the scales. He did not know the word "cartel" but he faced the reality, and faced it bravely with the word of the Lord.

Lord, let Your word change our hearts and our world.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That all those who are able to benefit from a holiday period may be helped during their vacation to rediscover in God their inner harmony and to open themselves to the love of human beings.
