Jesus' words on the right use of money come close on the Parable of the Dishonest Steward, and serve to emphasise that the steward's conduct is not to be taken as an example but a warning.

Money and its use was as common a problem in Jesus' day as it is today. Here He distinguishes between money that is 'tainted' and money that is honestly accumulated and put to good use. He is referring to two opposing standards of value, and the general principle of conduct should be to choose to use one's material wealth to build up true spiritual riches. How so? Wealth, if used for good works can speak for us and lead to "the tents of eternity"(Lk:16:9).

An example of such use of money is the subject of Paul's letter to the Philippians. He writes with warmth and affection to the Philippians whom he had visited on his first missionary journey outside of Asia. They had received him well, providing him with accommodation and money. They continued to be supportive of him, again sending him money while he was a prisoner. Paul's gratitude for their concern and financial help is expressed in today's Reading. Paul reiterates what Jesus said about the use of money - that the gift of money itself is not as valuable as "the interest that is mounting up in your account." (v.17). In other words, by using their money to help him, they were building up spiritual riches.

Lord, help us to discern clearly the actual but hidden motives for our giving to needy causes. Amen.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That Christian men and women, aware of the vocation which is theirs in the Church, may answer generously to God's call to seek holiness in the midst of their lives.
