As human persons, we are inclined to depend on physical things for certainty and security. For example, we need money to make a living, a vehicle to move around and a house for our shelter. The list of items could go on and on to fulfill our material needs. These things make life a lot simpler and naturally we tend to depend on them.

In the Gospel today, Jesus is sending out the Twelve on mission. He had already initiated them into His own mission and His message by inviting them to journey with him. Now as He sends them on to spread this mission and message, He tells them "take nothing for the journey". They are to go without depending on any form of security, any of those material things that make life a lot easier even though it was way back then. Their priority now is the proclamation of the Kingdom of God. Jesus too was not going to be tagging along with them.

Why did Jesus set these conditions as a requisite for his disciples? It was not that they should be totally cut off from material things. They would need them just as we do but their primary dependence now would have to be on God. So they were not to worry about all other things but to go in faith and trust in God.

How about us as we do God's will in our lives?
