Jesus chooses strange people to be His closest followers. The idea of calling a tax collector to be a disciple would certainly seem very strange to most devout Jews of Jesus' time. The tax collector was regarded as greedy, corrupt and, because he was working for a foreign power (Rome), was seen as a traitor by his own people. And, when he is called, Levi immediately leaves behind him the source of his security in life and goes with Jesus, with little idea of what it may entail. We, too, in spite of our many weaknesses and failings have also been called? What kind of response are we giving?
Levi then celebrates his new life by throwing a party for his friends who are, of course, other tax collectors. Jesus and His disciples are also invited. Those who regard themselves as "good" are shocked that Jesus should mix with such people. But how will Jesus reach them unless He spends time with them? He certainly does not approve of their sinful ways. But the sick can only be healed if the doctor spends time with them. Similarly with sinners who are being called to change their ways. As Christians, we should perhaps spend more time with those in spiritual need than we normally do. 'I take pleasure in the turning back of a wicked person', says the Lord
Lord, show us the way to offer quality time to those in need.
