The tax collectors, publicans, money-changers, herdsmen, outcasts of Jewish society, were unwelcome among the religious authorities of the time but were deliberately sought after by Jesus, the Rabbi. Jesus' identification with sinners was already prefigured in His Baptism. Now we see it in a concrete human situation in His table fellowship with sinners. It was shocking, scandalous behaviour, in the eyes of the Pharisees. Their question is addressed to the disciples to dissuade them from following Jesus as their Master. It is the self-righteous who do not need Him, says Jesus. Their attitude keeps them from God's salvation which is inherent in Jesus. Jesus is all out to break down the barriers of separation erected by religion and society. God accepts sinners unconditionally and He forgives them freely. His unmerited love for all beings is present in Jesus. The Kingdom of God's love coming into a person's life and experience will effect a radical transformation of the person. Jesus' answer to the Pharisees' question cuts like a two-edged sword. His Word penetrates our innermost thoughts and if we are open to the Lord, He will bring about a new beginning for us in this new year.
