The First Reading makes a distinction between the "famous" and the "generous". Strange - but it is the famous who are most likely to be forgotten "as though they had never existed". On the other hand, in the case of the generous "their glory will not fade". There is a very simple way for us to test this statement. First, for example, try to name the last ten actresses to win the Oscar or all the teams which were in the FA Cup Final during the 1990s. Now, try to remember the five best teachers you had in school, the names of five people who really helped you when you needed them - and so on. Presumably, none of the people you can remember so easily would be considered famous and, even if they are, that is not why you remember them. It means, too, that every one of us can be that kind of person for others. Do I want my name on the front page of the newspaper or in the heart of someone who needed me?
Lord, teach me to be generous.
