The parable of the 'Wise and Foolish Virgins' talks about the wisdom of the wise virgins who were prepared to meet the bridegroom. This refers to a practical wisdom about salvation.
From this reading we affirm that the Son of Man is the Lord of surprises. The oil stands for the good works which the foolish ones lack. The refusal of the wise virgins to share the oil does not constitute lack of charity and helpfulness. This means that their good works are not completely transferable. In terms of the question of 'being saved', others can help but the readiness to accept salvation is ultimately a matter of personal responsibility. Doesn't this sound familiar as regards involvement in church ministry or participating in the weekly Eucharist? Can another member of my family or community be responsible for my salvation while I adopt the 'apathy' attitude towards my faith. This is why the door is shut to the foolish virgins because admission to heaven is not automatic. Baptism alone cannot secure eternal salvation for this being with the Lord.
This is affirmed in the first reading where it confirms that the accessibility to wisdom depends on the one who seeks. This is again reiterated in the second reading wherein it states that the living will have no advantage over the dead when Parousia occurs. Meanwhile let us encourage one another in this journey together.
Lord, give us the grace to be always alert so that we are prepared to meet You daily in our lives.
