Once again we are back at the beginning of a Church year. It may seem strange to begin a year by talking about the end of the world. But it is important that, when we set out on a journey, we should know where we are going. Otherwise we are drifting aimlessly. We are not just called to lead good lives on a day to day basis. Our calling is one day to be united with our God through Jesus Christ. Everything we do then each day is related to that final goal. And, as the Gospel emphasises, we do not know when that day will come. Some will have some warning through long-term illness but for others it could happen in a split second.Think of tsunami or earthquake or traffic victims. None of us knows how the end will come. The warning then today is to be ready - now. And I do that by recognising the presence of Jesus in every person and in every experience of every day. Then, when He does call - late or soon - I will not hear those terrible words: "Go away! I do not know you." Instead, He will say: "Come, you blessed of my Father!"

Let us see, O Lord, Your mercy and give us Your saving help.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That Christ, meek and humble of heart, may inspire those responsible for nations to use power wisely and responsibly.
