The day that we marry is one of the most important days in our entire life. It is the occasion when we commit ourselves to another person for our entire life time. Total commitment is something that people seem to have difficulty coming to terms with. In Moses time there were circumstances which allowed a person to divorce. Jesus, however, seeks to amend the Mosaic law. He points to creation and says that God created male and female so that when they commit to each other in marriage they become as one.

At a time when the sanctity of marriage is under threat it is reassuring to be reminded of the importance which Jesus places on it. We are living in a consumer age, where people expect instant satisfaction. If something is not working, then it is just replaced. This clear statement by Jesus "so then, what God has united, man must not divide" is a great challenge to all married people.

This statement also protects women. Men often appear to become more attractive as they age and mature but it is the exact opposite with women. A multi-billion cosmetics industry attests to this. It is therefore reassuring that Jesus says that married couples should remain faithful to each other come what may.

Lord, help us to remain committed to each other, especially in difficult times.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
