The reading from Joel gives us the keynote for Lent, "Come back to me with all your heart". It is a time for sincerity with ourselves. The readings warn us against adopting Lenten practices which merely satisfy our desire to be doing something rather than allowing a change of heart within. Even fasting, giving alms and saying more prayers could proceed from vanity, self-satisfaction and pride. Such a way of passing the weeks of Lent will not draw us closer to Christ. They might instead tend to make us more self-centered.
How then should we face up to the challenge of Lent? It is a time for sorrow for the past but with hope to do better. It is an opportunity to stir ourselves from drifting in our relationship with God. It is a testing time of our readiness to forgive and accept forgiveness, to be concerned for the needs of others.
Lord, we thank You for this season of reflection and prayer. Help us to see things with Your wisdom. Give us the strength to change what You dislike in our lives. With Your grace may we overcome the obstacles that hinder us from loving You and serving our brothers and sisters.

DAILY OFFERING
|
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
