A challenging call from Jesus today to be generous but to be generous in a particular way - in our compassion for others. The 'compassion' comes from the Latin meaning 'suffering with', sharing, understanding the pain that others are going through. It was a particularly beautiful quality of Jesus himself. How many times we are told that, on seeing some person in pain or need, he was filled with compassion, e.g. when he was approached by a leper, when he saw the crowds like sheep without a shepherd. This is the very opposite of sitting in judgement on others and condemning them - something we tend to do so much of the time. It is, in fact, a sign of our own insecurity. By showing up the (imagined) wrongs of others, we somehow try to put ourselves in a better light. It is a self-centred approach and we gain nothing from it. The way of Jesus is different. It is to be generous and outgoing towards others. And the more we give them of ourselves, the more we share with them, the more enriched we ourselves become.
Be compassionate as Your Father is compassion, says the Lord.
