Jesus is truly divine and truly human. Isaiah pictured a suffering human being who would be the instrument of God's will and the channel of justification for many. The Letter to the Hebrews saw something of this vision fulfilled, not in any human being, but in the divinity and humanity of Jesus. He is our high priest because He is the Son of God. But He is a compassionate high priest because He underwent the normal human experience of weakness, and even of temptation.
Against the notion, expressed throughout the Bible that only a strong God could be Saviour, Isaiah saw suffering and humility as the true path of God. Jesus, we may believe, realized that Isaiah's dream was the only true way, and undertook to fulfill the prophecy in his own life.
The humility of Jesus, manifested in His incarnation, His suffering, and His obedience unto death, is contrasted rather poignantly with today's Gospel story of human ambition. The Apostles had to learn, as we all do, that the path to divine glory can never be one of ambition, but only that of humility.
Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true Man, Son of God, and compassionate High Priest.
