In today's Gospel we reach a turning point in Mark's story. The disciples have been with Jesus for some time now and today He asks them first what the people are thinking of Him and then who they think He is. The people have various opinions - John the Baptist, Elijah or some other prophet. Then Peter, speaking in the name of all, makes his solemn declaration: "You are the Messiah, the Christ." It is a solemn moment for all and they must have been filled with pride to be so privileged as to be so close to the long-awaited Saviour of Israel.

It comes as a terrible shock then suddenly to be told of Jesus' fate - suffering, rejection by the leaders of their own people, death and resurrection. It completely contradicts their expectations of the glorious and victorious Messiah-King. Peter objects strongly, only to hear the terrible words - "Get behind me, Satan!" And that is not the end, because Jesus then goes on to say that all His true followers must be ready to carry a cross behind Jesus. Do I accept the whole Jesus? Am I ready to accept any crosses and trials that may come my way in following him? The disciple cannot be greater than the Master.
