Today's readings present a paradox which we often find difficult to accept. James tells us that the wisdom that comes from God makes for peace and is kindly and considerate, is full of compassion and shows itself by doing good. When we are full of that kind of wisdom and radiate it through our words and behaviour, we will be loved and admired by all. Right? Not really. As the Book of Wisdom reminds us, the virtuous person is on the contrary a source of annoyance, a threat and a reproach to many of us. The most obvious example of this is Jesus Himself, who generated so much hostility and hatred that He had to be killed and got rid of. And, as Jesus reminds us, the disciple is not better than the Master.

Like Him, we are called to love totally and unconditionally; no more than He was, we are not promised that we will be loved in return. This is a real challenge. With God's help I can face it.

Teach me, Lord, to serve You as You deserve, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That those who use the means of social communication may always do so consciously and responsibly.
