There are many earthly powers that control the lives of people: economic forces, political regimes, ideologies, unjust social and economic structures, and brute military force. It is difficult sometimes not to feel helpless or give in to despair. Daniel was written during a time of terrible persecution when many faithful Jews were suffering and dying for their faith. The message is one of encouragement: these powers will only exist for a time. Their days are numbered. There is only one real power, and that is the power of God. In the end, the earth belongs to the holy ones of the Most High. It is important not to be afraid in front of earthly powers. They will all be measured by God's standards. Whatever is not of God will eventually crumble and pass away.
We don't know what the future will bring or when our lives might end. When we are careless with our spiritual lives or delay doing what is necessary and right, we might discover that we no longer have the opportunity to be with the Lord. Living in the present moment is joyful and liberating. Each day we should ask ourselves if we are ready to be with the Lord. Tell someone that we love them. Put something right. Let us not delay, but be awake.
Lord, may I live constantly in your presence.

Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
