The passage from Isaiah concentrates on the plan of God and the power of God to execute such a plan. When Israel became unfaithful and temporarily lost its political footing, God took on the role of redeemer. In the Canaanite and Hebrew cultures the 'redeemer' is usually the nearest male relative who protects a widow, or pays off debts or intercedes on behalf of the person in need. God fulfils the role of protector and liberator from a stance of justice. Such fidelity on God's part is consonant with God's own goodness.
In the Gospel Jesus praises John for being the greatest of all prophets because he ushers in the Messianic kingdom. This new Messianic kingdom of God is realized in Jesus Christ through His presence in those who choose to belong to His Kingdom and have seen the power of God. They have come to know that the Father will accomplish even greater things. Thus, they can live with singleness of purpose, demonstrating the courage to perceive God's faithful presence in the midst of violent rejection of His values.
Lord, keep us sustained in the power of Your faithfulness.
