In this vocation story Jesus' miracle motivated the first disciples to leave all things and follow him. Isaiah's vocation also occurred in the context of a miraculous manifestation of God's majesty. On the other hand, in the Gospels, Jesus is careful to warn us that miracles can produce amazement, but that such amazement may not lead to faith or to a vocation.

In a deeper sense, however, our willingness to follow Jesus is always the product of many miracles: the miracle of Jesus' presence, the miracle of God's love calling us, the miracle of grace giving us the freedom to respond, that grace by which God increases the strength of our soul, as today's Psalm expresses it.

Jesus gets into Peter's boat, and Peter's boat became a great symbol of the Church. This is a reminder that the vocation to leave all things and follow Jesus as disciple and as apostle is set within the miracle of God's love manifested in the Gospel and in the Church, which is the historical realization of the Gospel in community.
