In today's Gospel reading, we see Jesus answering the question raised by the Pharisees strongly, saying that it is not the external things that make one clean or unclean, pure or impure before God. What is important is to realize that the heart is the source of all defilement. It is out of the hearts of people that all kinds of vices spring which affect mutual human relationships.
Jesus came to establish a new order, God's kingdom in which legalism and external acts of piety have no value if they do not affect people in their totality. Laws, customs and religious practices are meant for the well-being of the people. Traditions are to be observed provided they bring about gospel values of love and justice. Overemphasis of these traditions may take one away from the very essence of true discipleship.
We are challenged to examine our spirituality - is it one which affirms the goodness of all creation? Do the practices and tradition in our country and society frustrate and nullify Gospel values?
Similarly, is the act of obedience to God expected of man and woman in the Garden of Eden borne of freewill or otherwise? Do we obey because we have to or do we want to?
Lord, help us to be constantly aware of traditions and practices which are not life-giving and have the courage to do away with those what are opposed to the Gospel values.
