On Christmas night we heard the angels pointing out to shepherds where the Chosen One of God had just been born, and telling them to go see Him there. Today we hear John the Baptist pointing out Jesus to the people crowding around, and telling them that He is the Lamb of God come to take away the world's sins. John admitted that he himself didn't really know who Jesus was until it was revealed to him by the Father, when the Holy Spirit came and rested on Jesus. Then John truly recognised what he was seeing and became the witness that this Jesus is the Chosen One of God.
In this Christmas season, despite all the commercialism, there still is the figure of the little child born at Bethlehem. Perhaps it does not feature greatly in all the lights and decorations, or even on so-called 'Christmas cards'. It is more notable in many of the songs we sing and perhaps hear too much of in all the shopping malls and office lobbies. So many people see and hear: but do they really know what they are seeing? Those of us who recognise Christ there are like John, who received from God that grace that made him able to say, "there is the Lamb of God". And he said it to the people around him. How well have I this season witnessed to myself and to others my faith that this is no ordinary child, this is no fairy-tale, but truly the Saviour of the world?
Jesus, You are the Lamb of God.
