This passage is the only passage in the Bible where Nathanael is mentioned by name. It could be that it is a symbolic name to mean each one of us or it could be the second name of Bartholomew. Whatever the explanation the fact that Christ knew what was in his heart, caused Nathanael to be so shaken up by the fact that he declared "You are the Son of God. You are the King of Israel."
During the Christmas season, let us contemplate God's call to each one of us. "I have called you by name, you are mine" (Is. 43:1). In our lives, we often make choices, not according to God's will but according to our own comfort and convenience. We are not used to looking up at the star to guide us but we prefer to light our way with our own candles - a feeble light which reflects our narrow field of vision. Let us spur ourselves forward to spurn spiritual mediocrity. Jesus, the Babe of Bethlehem, is continually passing by us. Let us accept Him and follow His Way always.
Lord, You who guided the Wise Men decades ago to reach the Babe in Bethlehem, accept our prayers and guide us to reach the eternal Bethlehem.

DAILY OFFERING
|
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.
