Zacchaeus was anxious to see "what kind of man Jesus was". The daily reading of the Gospel should lead us to the same desire. As we read the stories of Jesus and listen to His words, we can easily be captivated by His miracles and activities and the wisdom of His words. We can meditate on the significance of these miracles and these words. If we stop there, however, we miss out on the contemplative spirit which the Gospels can cultivate in our hearts. As we ponder any miracle of Jesus, we can pause for a moment to look at the person who is working the miracle. We look, of course, not out of curiosity but out of faith and love and so beyond the miracle and the various truths it manifests to us. We come to know and love the person of Jesus Himself. So, too, for His teaching. We can listen to His words. Then we can pause and raise our eyes, as it were, to the person who speaks these words. Behind Jesus' words we can learn to contemplate the man Jesus, who was not only son of Mary but also Son of God.
Father in heaven, guide us that our prayer may become more contemplative and we may more deeply come to know Your Son.
