We remember today the dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome. This church - and not St Peter's - is the cathedral church of the Roman diocese of which, of course, the Pope is the Bishop. We celebrate it universally as the mother of all churches. The readings, however, remind us that we are celebrating much more than a building of stone. For it is a symbol of Church, the living body of people, who as Ezekiel says of the Jerusalem Temple, is a source of living water bringing life and nourishment to all they touch. And that body itself gets its life from the "sanctuary of Jesus' body", from whose bosom flows fountains of living water. Only in so far as we the People of God are both corporately and individually living Temples of the Holy Spirit, does the dedication of a building have any real meaning.
