The 72 disciples returned from their mission and, with great excitement, told Jesus of all the things they were able to do in his name. Even the devils submitted to them. Jesus then reminds them of how privileged they are. Probably most of these disciples were, like the majority of people in their time, quite illiterate, unable to read or write. Yet, because of their association with Jesus they learnt truths about the meaning of life of which many intelligent and educated people knew nothing. Through Jesus, the Son, they have come to a deeper understanding of who God, the Father of Jesus, is. And so he turns to them and says how fortunate they are to have seen the things they have seen done by Jesus, the Son of God. Prophets and kings longed to see what they saw, to hear what they heard but never had the opportunity. This is a truth which we need to reflect on. Closeness to God and the Truth of God is not a matter of wealth, power, status or high intelligence. It only comes to those whose hearts are open to the unconditional love and service of brothers and sisters and finding God in them. This is something the simplest person can do.
Blessed are you, Father, for revealing the deepest meaning of life to the simple and unlearned.
