When people do not want to accept the message of Jesus, they will put all kinds of negative interpretations on it to justify their position. In today's Gospel, some people were saying that it was through the power of Beelzebul, the prince of devils, that Jesus was casting out devils. Jesus quickly points out the intrinsic contradiction of their words. Why would the prince of devils drive out those who were doing his work? Every kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. On the other hand, if it is through the finger of God that Jesus drives out evil spirits, then they should know that the Reign of God is among them in the person of Jesus. Jesus is the stronger man who can drive out those evil powers who claim possession of the world. There is only one Way to God and that is the Way of Jesus, this is the Way that will bring people together as one.

Finally, there is a warning that it is not enough to drive out an evil spirit. That can leave a dangerous vacuum. Its place must be taken by something else, by Someone else, by total commitment to the Way of Jesus. Anyone filled with the Spirit of Jesus will not want anything else.
