As is the case with most of the early Christians, we know little about the background of St.Mark. One touching thing we do know about him is that he apparently felt home-sick on the first missionary journey with Paul and Barnabas and returned home to Jerusalem, presumably to his mother Mary (Acts 13:13). Thus we may think of him as a young man, leaving home for the first time. Paul seems to have been somewhat unforgiving and lacking in sympathy for the young man and so was reluctant to let him come with them on the second journey (Acts 37-39). If we may read between the lines, we can surmise that Mark found more understanding in Peter, who accepted him, even calling him "my son" (1Pet 5:13).

If the story of Mark shows up a difference in the ways Peter and Paul dealt with this young man, we may reflect on our own modern situation where many young people do not really find themselves at home in the Church. Should we be more like Paul, apparently something of a hard-liner, or more like Peter, apparently more sympathetic and understanding? The question answers itself.

Holy Spirit, guide us in the way we deal with young people, so that they will find warmth and understanding in the Church and be encouraged to remain faithful to the Gospel.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That Christians, even in the difficult and complex situations of present day society, may not tire of proclaiming with their lives that Christ's resurrection is the source of hope and of peace.
