INTENTION : That, faced by the growing expansion of the culture of violence and death, the Church may courageously promote the culture of life through all her apostolic and missionary activities.

Our civilization, it seems, is unable to get out of a culture of death and violence. The daily news is filled with scenes and reports of violence, carnage and pillage. These spectacles of death, cruelty and violence have become entertainment for the masses living in non-conflict situations. But for those caught in its cross-fires it is a never-ending culture of fear, deprivation, injustice and violence of the body and spirit. These manifestations give substance to a growing expansion of a culture of death in our times.

The Church that sings the praises of the Living God cannot be associated with deprivation of life in any form. We need to say to the widely prevalent culture of death, death-dealing forces of life through drug-abuse, deceit, fraud, injustice, contempt of others, and flight from reality do not enhance the abundance of life that the Living God came to give.

The culture of life is expressed and promoted in the Ten Commandments. They present and promote a great vision of life. The first three commandments say "yes" to God who gives meaning to life. The fourth says "yes" to family. The fifth says "yes" to life. The sixth says "ye" to responsible love. The seventh says "yes" to solidarity, justice and social responsibility. The eighth says "yes" to truth and the ninth and tenth commandments say "yes" to respect for others and their belongings.
