"The stalk of grain that forms no ear can yield no flour."

Today's reading from the Prophet Hosea is a stern admonition against the people of Israel. God was not pleased with them because of their unfaithfulness. The Israelites wanted to build their public and religious life in accordance with their own ideas and not on the strong foundation of God's law. They thought that it would be possible to achieve lasting and true happiness without God. However, God warned them that instead of prosperity they could expect punishment and slavery.

"The stalk of grain that forms no ear can yield no flour; Even if it could, strangers would swallow it." Life without obedience to God is meaningless and fruitless. It is God, our Good Shepherd who protects us against slavery to Satan, sin and death.

Do I trust in God's providence? Do I follow faithfully my Good Shepherd? Am I attentive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit during my prayer?
