The story of the disciples on the way to Emmaus. They are running away from possible danger because of their relationship with Jesus, who had been executed as a criminal. They had heard stories of resurrection but did not believe them. They meet a stranger who helps them understand everything that occurred and how what happened to Jesus was all in total conformity with the Scripture. Very happily, they offer the hospitality of their home to the Stranger but when he unexpectedly presides at the meal with bread and wine, their eyes are opened and everything falls into place. The effect is electric. They immediately get up and head back for Jerusalem - where their own experience is confirmed - the Lord is risen indeed! The story is a beautiful image of the Christian life - it is a journey in which Jesus appears again and again in the most unexpected people, where people live under the guidance of God's Word in the Scriptures and where they celebrate their unity with Christ and each other in the Breaking of Bread. The story is also a model of the Eucharist with the Liturgy of the Word (the Breaking of the Word) followed by the sharing of the Bread and Wine (the Breaking of Bread).
