"Make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth."
In today's Gospel reading Jesus gives us a very clear warning and guidance concerning wealth and money. Wealth is dishonest because its power is limited to our earthly life only; however it gives us a false illusion that we are independent and our life will always be secure. Wealth is dishonest because it will inevitably fail, but it makes us thinking that we are in control over our life and the lives of others. Wealth is dishonest because it causes division in our hearts and tempts us to compromise our faith. We cannot serve God and mammon.
Indeed, we cannot be slaves or servants of money, but we should use it and make it helpful to live our faith and gain our salvation. We are trustworthy with dishonest wealth and make friends with it when we are prudent, honest and generous.
"If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you what is yours?"
Do I spend my money for what I really need? Do I contribute to the common good paying taxes honestly? Am I generous sharing my resources with people in need? How much money do I offer to support the work of evangelization?
"Happy the man who fears the Lord. Open-handed, he gives to the poor; his justice stands firm for ever."
