How To Pray With Shalom

Today we have Luke's version of the confession of Peter and what follows. It is much shorter than what we find in Mark and Matthew. What is significant is that, immediately beforehand, Jesus has been praying. In Luke's gospel, Jesus always prays before important happenings in his life. So should we. After asking them who people are saying Jesus is, he goes on to ask them what they believe. Peter, in the name of all, answers: "You are the Messiah of God." 'Messiah' is the Hebrew version of 'Christ', the Saviour King that Israel was longing to see. Jesus then tells them not to say anything about it, because the people (and they themselves) are not yet ready for the kind of Messiah he is going to be. He then tells them what is going to happen to him. We know from the other gospels that the disciples were horrified at this information. It will take them until after the Resurrection to understand its meaning and value. We might ask who Jesus is for us? Do we identify with a suffering Jesus? Are we ready to carry our cross with Jesus. Only if we die with him, can we rise with him.

You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God!

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That those who, because of wars or oppressive regimes, are forced to leave their homes and country may be supported by Christians in the defence and protection of their rights.
