"Keep the rule and the rule will keep you." Young people entering religious life often hear this advice. We can adapt it for Christians with reference to the Word of God. "Keep the word of God and the word of God will keep you." In today's verse before the Gospel we listen to Jesus' words: "Happy are they who have kept the word with a generous heart and yield a harvest through perseverance." Jesus invites us: "If you live according to my teaching, you are truly my disciples." There are three promises attached to Jesus' call to live according to his teaching. First of all, we will be Jesus' disciples, we will belong to him. Secondly, we will know the truth and, thirdly, the truth will set us free. Jesus himself is the truth, for he brings God's truth to us. The more closely we are united with Jesus, the more freedom we will enjoy.
A new phrase has appeared in our language "a culture of anything goes." Those who promote or live by such a culture can never be true disciples of Jesus. A "culture of anything goes" is far from keeping the word of God, only the truth will make us free.
Lord Jesus, keep us in your truth so that we may live sincerely as Your beloved disciples.
