In today's first reading Saint Peter teaches us a very important principle that should guide us as Catholics and citizens of our countries. This principle is that obedience to God comes before obedience to men. How can we understand this rule and put it into action?
Through his bold witness in front of the Sanhedrin Saint Peter reminds us that God's authority is stronger than any earthly authority and God's law is supreme to any human law. Opposing the ancient authorities of Israel, Saint Peter also teaches us that the Church is supreme to civil authorities in the matter of faith and morals.
Faith is not a private matter but it is our duty to profess our Christian faith in the public and acknowledge in front of others, that Jesus is the only Saviour of the world, especially when they question us. We should also remember that not everything that is legal is right. As disciples of Jesus we cannot tolerate evil law but we must oppose and speak against injustice and immorality. Our testimony is always more powerful when we not only protest against evil, but live in accordance to our faith and can explain the teaching of our Church.
Lord, give us the courage and wisdom to profess and defend our faith in the face of anyone who asks us for a reason for our hope in Jesus Christ our Lord (1 Peter 3: 15).
