Today Jesus explains how it is through him that we come in contact with God and his teaching. The Father is totally invisible so how are we to know his will? Everyone who believes in God has eternal life. But how are we to know what we should believe? We do that through Jesus, who is the Bread that gives life. It is through Jesus, whom we can see and hear, who speaks to us in our human language, so that we know what God wants us to be and do. Jesus tells His listeners that their ancestors in the desert were fed by God with manna, which simply satisfied their bodily needs. But the Bread that Jesus gives comes down from His Father. Unlike the manna of the Israelites, whoever eats this Bread is destined for life without end. Because this Bread that Jesus gives is His flesh giving life to the world. It is through the tangible humanity of Jesus that we are put in touch with this Way of life that comes from God. To eat this Bread is to make the Way of Jesus totally ours - and that is what we signify through the Sacrament of the Eucharist we celebrate together.
Whoever eats this Bread will live forever.
