There has always been a struggle between light and darkness, so it is not surprising that there are so many warlike images in the New Testament. When we see so much suffering and injustice in the world we sometimes ask how God can allow it. We might even wonder where God is to be found in such a mess. But the readings assure us that the salvation of the world is a process - it is not completed yet. The darkness tries to destroy the light struggling to be born, but God is ultimately in charge and in the end light and goodness will triumph. Paul assures us that although the return of Christ and the general resurrection is in the future, there is much work to be done first. The world must be brought back to the reign of God. Jesus is overcoming all of God's adversaries so that he can present a harmonious and renewed world to God the Father. And we are invited to join the Lord in that quest!

If the redemption of the world is an evolving process, then we should expect great changes whenever God is at work. Mary celebrates the fact that God is visiting His people - and she rejoices in the changes that this will bring. The high and mighty will be humbled while the humble and lowly will be exalted. The hungry will be fed while the rich and satisfied will experience lack. We should never cling to the past or the way things are, nor should we fear changes - God is at work!

Lord, may I be Your instrument.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
INTENTION
That public opinion may be more aware of the problem of millions of displaced persons and refugees and that concrete solutions may be found for their often tragic situation.
