Today we have the story of a rich man. He was a good man and he came to Jesus asking what more he needed to do to merit eternal life. Jesus told him to be faithful to the commandments. It is worth noting that the commandments Jesus mentions are all related to the well-being of other people. Commandments relating to God are significantly not mentioned. And, as if to emphasise the point, Jesus adds: "You must love your neighbour as yourself." The man asserted that he was doing this already and asked what more needed to be done. "If you wish to be perfect," replied Jesus, "go and sell everything you have and share it with the poorˇK and then come, follow me." At this point, the man became downcast and walked away from Jesus. He was not as good as he thought. He said he loved his neighbour as himself but, when challenged on this by sharing his wealth with the poor, he could not do it. And so, he could not be a disciple of Jesus. How much do I love my neighbour? What limits do I put? What would be the most difficult thing Jesus could ask me to give away to someone in need? How ready am I to do this?
By this will all know You are my disciples, that You have love for one another.
