Bartholomew was one of the Twelve Apostles whose name is mentioned in Matthew, Mark and Luke and in the Acts of the Apostles and usually paired with Philip. But some have identified with Nathanael, a disciple who only appears in John and in the company of Philip, although this identity is disputed. So, the Gospel of today speaks of the encounter between Jesus and Nathanael. Just before this, Philip, who, like Peter and Andrew, was from Bethsaida, had been called by Jesus. Now he in turn goes and finds his friend. He invites Nathanael to meet someone "that Moses wrote about in the Law." At first Nathanael is rather dismissive of Jesus, when he hears of his origins - "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" But, after they meet and Jesus reveals something that only Nathanael could have known, he is overcome with awe and respect and utters two of Jesus' unique titles - Son of God and King of Israel. Jesus assures him that in time he will see a lot more. In an image taken from the dream of Jacob, Nathanael is told he will see the power of God coming down on Jesus. Philip is a model follower of Jesus because he not only becomes a disciple himself but invites others to know Jesus also. We can admire Nathanael, too, who was ready to change his firm thinking when faced with new facts.

Happy the people whose god is Yahweh!

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
