The spirit of Advent largely consists in living close to Our Lady during this time when she is carrying Jesus in her womb. We can think of the whole of our life as a somewhat longer "Advent", a time of waiting for that definitive moment when we will at last find ourselves with God forever. And in this, Mary, our Blessed Mother, will certainly help us very much. Meditate for a moment in today's Gospel.
Wherever She went, Mary was bringing joy. "Behold your greeting has made the babe in my womb leap for joy" - says Elizabeth at her first encounter with Mary. And hearing such praise from her cousin, Mary replied with words which have become the most beautiful hymn of joy: My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour.
In the Magnificat we may find the deepest meaning of true humility and gratitude. Mary considers that God regards her as His handmaid and thus, He who is mighty has done great things in her.
There is no better way of preparing for Christmas which is now so close, than by keeping Mary company. She will bring His Son to us and through her we will know Christ more and better.
Oh Mary, as you did in the Visitation, bring us to Your Son and impart in us a thorough knowledge and love of and for Him.
