There is precious little light in our own time, but an abundance of hatred, violence, and fear. Light - radiance - joy - all biblical metaphors for God or the presence of God - are promised to all humanity. But how can and why should the nations of the earth see the light and turn to God? There is no magical formula that will make this a reality. However, to walk in justice, compassion, joy and peace is like a powerful beacon shining in the darkest night. This can only happen when people actually see and experience the presence of God in individual.

Although they are foreigners, the three Magi are guided by spiritual sensitivity and openness and by seeking minds and hearts. They ask no cynical questions, set no conditions, and do not approach this event with suspicion or self-seeking. Quite simply, they are overjoyed, especially after risking so much to make the journey. Although there are many who welcome the light with eagerness, there are many more who would be only too happy to snuff it out before it can do any 'damage'. Herod rightly senses a challenge to his power, his values, and the very structure of the society over which he rules. The birth of this child means that nothing will ever be the same, despite the untiring efforts of those who love darkness. The epiphany is not merely a long-ago event. Its significance and power are still being unpacked.

Lord, help me to see the light.

DAILY OFFERING
Eternal Father, I offer You everything I do this day; my thoughts, words, joys and sufferings. Grant that, vivified by the Holy Spirit and united to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, my life this day may be of service to You and to others. I also pray that all those preparing for marriage discover in Sacrament the source of Christ's grace for living a fithful and fruitful love. Amen.

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH
