The scene in the synagogue is dramatic. Jesus presents Himself and His programme as fulfiling all the hopes and expectations of the people of Israel. There was something riveting about Him and, at first, His listeners obviously felt that He had something really worthwhile to say to them. Their inital reaction to Him was favourable. He told the people that He had come to support and strengthen those who were in need economically, spiritually, physically, psychologically and socially. It is only when we realise we are in need and that we cannot help ourselves that we accept an offer of help gracefully.
When Jesus was criticised for mixing with sinners and outcasts He very reasonably pointed out that, just as healthy people don't need a doctor, so those who consider themselves completely self sufficient do not think they need a helper of any kind. Which of us I wonder could dare to say to Christ, "Thank you, its very kind of you but I really can get on fine without you?"
Sadly some of those who listened to Jesus in the synagogue that morning allowed themselves to be distracted from their need for him by petty jealousy. Others who listened to him on other occasions totally rejected him because they were almost insulted by his speaking to them of their possible neediness. What could distract us or irritate us as we come to know Christ?
O Lord, come to our aid. O God, make haste to help us.
